Slovakia will support the candidacy of the outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the position of NATO Secretary General, in exchange for assistance from the Netherlands in securing its air defence, President Peter Pellegrini announced on Tuesday (June 18) following the conclusion of an extraordinary European Council meeting.
Slovakia initially wanted a representative from Central and Eastern Europe, for the new top job, even Rutte’s rival for Secretary General, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, would have fit the bill. In the end, however, Bratislava opted for Rutte.
