Romania is by far the leader in the European Union when it comes to drowning deaths, with approximately 21% of all such incidents in the EU reported in our country in 2021, according to data published by Eurostat.
There were 5,004 drowning deaths reported in the EU in 2021, 532 more than in 2020 (4,472).
However, among the member states, Romania is by far in the first place, with 1,033 drowning deaths.
Following at a distance are France, with 653 drowning deaths, Poland (466), and Germany (457).
The lowest number of drowning deaths were reported in Luxembourg (1), Malta (3), and Cyprus (9).
